As a candidate to be a strong voice for Douglas South in the election being held on 27 August, I have been entrusted with the personal names and addresses of voters. Amongst other requirements, Isle of Man law requires that candidates register with the Isle of Man Information Commissioner.

Around a dozen years ago, when I was serving as the Senior Manager with PokerStars responsible for combating player fraud, I became acutely aware of the importance of appropriate data security. Indeed, I led the deployment of what was then one of the world’s largest ever deployments of consumer-facing two-factor authentication projects. This was a world-leading project to help secure customer accounts from online hackers. This project involved deploying RSA Security Tokens to many thousands of customers, and further account security enhancements to tens of thousands of customers. At the time, we were the only online poker operator in the world to offer such high-grade protection to customers.

As a result, prior to announcing my candidacy for Douglas South, I registered with the IOM Information Commissioner as the law requires. My registration number was IC256966I.

The relevant details of my registration included appointing myself as the Data Protection Officer under Article 37 of the Applied GDPR.

As part of that, I needed to register various contact details:

Name: Michael Josem
Email: michael@michaeljosem.com
Phone: 07624 488557
Address: 1 Hillary Wharf, South Quay, Douglas, IM1 5BL

I was surprised to learn at the Douglas South requisition meeting last night that some other candidates announced that they had failed to comply with the law and had failed to register with the Isle of Man information commissioner. That is a matter for those candidates to address, and I trust that they will bring themselves into compliance with the law as appropriate.

Michael Josem is a long-term consumer advocate, most prominently as a global leader in combating fraud in the online gambling industry. He was in part the inspiration for the 20th Century Fox Movie, Runner Runner, starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake.

Josem has over a decade of experience as a senior business leader working across various high-tech and online industries, and takes action to build a better community. His primary volunteer roles include service for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and Graih, the homelessness charity.
